2 min read
Installing a bathroom shower mixer can improve your shower experience, allowing you to easily control both water temperature and flow. With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can tackle this project yourself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you install a bathroom shower mixer effectively.
Gather your tools and materials:
Before starting, ensure you have all the necessary tools and materials. You’ll need:
- A new shower mixer
- Pipe wrench or adjustable pliers
- Screwdriver (flathead and Phillips)
- Adjustable spanner
- Teflon tape
- Plumber’s putty or silicone sealant
- Level
- A towel for drying any spills
Having these items on hand will make the installation process smoother.
Turn off the water supply:
Before you begin, turn off the water supply to avoid any accidents. Locate the main shut-off valve for your home or the specific valve for the bathroom. Open the shower faucet to release any remaining water in the pipes, ensuring a dry installation process.
Remove the old shower mixer:
Using a screwdriver, remove any screws securing the old shower mixer to the wall. Then, gently pull it away from the wall. If it is tightly secured, use a pipe wrench to loosen the connections. Be cautious not to damage the pipes. Once the mixer is free, disconnect the plumbing fittings, and clean the area where the new mixer will be installed.
Install the new shower mixer:
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your new shower mixer. Begin by applying Teflon tape to the threads of the pipe fittings to prevent leaks. Connect the hot and cold water supply pipes to the corresponding inlet on the mixer, tightening them with a wrench. Ensure to maintain the correct orientation, as marked on the mixer.
Secure the mixer to the wall:
Once the pipes are connected, place the mixer against the wall. Use the provided mounting bracket or screws to secure the mixer in position. Ensure that it is level before fully tightening the screws. This step is important for both functionality and aesthetics.
If your shower mixer includes a handheld showerhead, connect the hose to the outlet on the mixer. Ensure the connection is tight and secure, applying plumber’s putty or silicone sealant around the base of the showerhead to prevent leaks.
